💡 A Lesson in Strategy and Service

Students from Kingston International Business College (KIBC) recently attended the Keys for Cure Charity Concert, a moving event dedicated to the memory of the Hon. Nikki Kaye and organized to raise funds for Mercy Hospice. More than a musical performance, the event offered students a unique learning opportunity that tied together themes of strategic management, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and project execution.

📈 Real-World Strategic Management in Action
The concert served as a live case study in how nonprofit organizations and community groups apply corporate strategy principles:

CSR and Social Impact: The Rotary Club of Greenlane aligned itself with a meaningful cause, enhancing its brand and demonstrating a commitment to community wellbeing.

Strategic Partnerships: Collaboration with Mercy Hospice, performing artists, local businesses, and a respected venue amplified the reach and credibility of the event.

Sustainable Fundraising: With donations and ticket sales supporting Mercy Hospice, the concert showcased a replicable nonprofit revenue model that could be sustained annually.

For students, this was a chance to observe how purpose-driven strategy can drive both impact and engagement—even beyond the business world.

🎯 Event Planning as Project Management
From a project management lens, the concert exemplified professional event execution:

Venue Selection: The PumpHouse Theatre provided both atmosphere and accessibility.

Timing and Scheduling: A Sunday morning event appealed to a broad audience.

Marketing and Promotion: Emotional storytelling centered on Nikki Kaye’s legacy drove attendance and donor interest.

Risk Management: Logistical details—such as technical planning and stakeholder coordination—were effectively handled to minimize disruptions.

Post-Event Evaluation: Measuring fundraising outcomes and attendee feedback offers a clear pathway to refining future events.

Students came away with valuable insights into the planning, coordination, and stakeholder engagement required for successful social events.

💬 Student Reflections
Here’s what our students had to say about their experience:

“It was more than a concert—it was a masterclass in how community, business, and purpose can come together.”

“We could clearly see the connection between what we study in strategic management and real community outcomes.”

“The event inspired us to think bigger about the role of business in society.”

🌍 Lessons for the Future
KIBC encourages students to not only learn from textbooks but also from real-world experiences that reflect the complexity and diversity of New Zealand’s social and business environment. The Keys for Cure concert was a powerful example of how strategy and service can come together to create meaningful change.
