On a warm autumn afternoon, students and faculty from Kingston International Business College (KIBC) stepped into the sacred grounds of Te Tahawai Marae Komiti, engaging in a profound cultural immersion experience. Through traditional ceremony, music, and collaborative games, KIBC students—many of whom hail from China and India—connected with Māori cultural guardians in a celebration of diversity, respect, and cross-cultural understanding.
The experience began with a Pōwhiri, the traditional Māori welcoming ceremony. Guided by marae elders, students embraced the deeply rooted values of hospitality, spirituality, and ancestral respect. Inside the intricately carved wharenui (meeting house), symbolic representations of whakapapa (genealogy) told powerful stories—reminding all present of the importance of living in harmony with the environment and each other.
During the interactive segment, students participated in Ti Rākau, a rhythmic stick game that brought teamwork and rhythm to life. Joy and laughter echoed throughout the marae as students moved in sync to chants and instructions. The session continued with the Poi dance, an embodiment of grace and strength in Māori culture. Students enthusiastically attempted the flowing movements, learning that each rhythmic beat carries deeper cultural meaning.
Music became a universal language as Māori hosts performed soulful guitar melodies, grounded in their connection to the land. In return, KIBC students contributed songs from their own traditions, forming an impromptu global chorus under the rafters of the marae. The harmonies, though rooted in different lands, blended beautifully—symbolizing mutual respect and global unity.
Reflecting on the event, Kingsley, Principal of Kingston International Business College, shared:
“Today, we witnessed something remarkable—when a guitar meets a bamboo flute, when an ancient stick game fuses with youthful enthusiasm, cultural differences transform into the foundation of friendship. This is what education should be—breaking down the walls of misunderstanding and allowing young minds to embrace the world with humility and curiosity.”
This immersive experience not only deepened students’ understanding of Māori culture but also reinforced KIBC’s mission to prepare globally minded leaders. As the visit concluded, students expressed their gratitude in heartfelt ways, their voices joining in a collective promise—to lead with empathy, to listen with respect, and to grow through shared human connection.
